VicHip: How it works
Building a future of healthier hips
We work with thousands of Victorian families to improve hip care and outcomes for children with hip dysplasia.
If your child has a hip check or treatment for hip dysplasia at a VicHip site, we collect their health information for research. While you can opt-out, we’d love your support!
What is VicHip?
The Victorian hip dysplasia registry (VicHip) is a clinical registry run by Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and The Royal Children's Hospital, with help from other health partners.
We study hip dysplasia (developmental dysplasia of the hip or DDH), a condition where the hip joint does not develop normally. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent problems later on.
Through research and collaboration, we aim to:
- learn more about its causes and risk factors
- find better ways to detect, treat and manage it
- improve care, services and outcomes for future patients.

What information do we collect?
We collect ultrasounds, X-rays, medical history, examination findings, treatment details and related costs. We start collecting this data after you tell us (at your appointment or over the phone) that you've received this notice. However, we wait two weeks before using it.
How you can help
You can take part in optional surveys that take about 5-15minutes. We send these surveys by email or text (from 0448 456 897) every 1 to 4 years. We ask about your daily activities, pain, treatment, experience of care and overall well-being. Your answers help us understand what’s working well and what could be improved.
Want to be more involved? Join our Consumer Advisory Group, share your thoughts and ideas in a focus group, or participate in other VicHip research or child health studies.
Your privacy
Australian privacy laws protect your information. We remove your name and other details that could identify you before using or sharing your information. Only your doctor, approved researchers and clinicians can access your information. Learn more about your data and privacy
Your choice
If you don’t want us to collect your health information, that’s ok. You can opt-out of VicHip anytime. Your decision will not affect your medical care.
